As DHS continues to expand the use of immigration detention, rescind humanitarian protections, and limit access to fair bond hearings, immigrants are increasingly forced to advocate for their freedom through habeas.

Building on the foundational Habeas 101 training, this session provides a brief overview of federal habeas practice, followed by a discussion of recent developments and trends and practical considerations for litigating immigration habeas petitions across California’s four federal districts. The training is led by Bardis Vakili, Interim Executive Director of CHRCL, and Evelyn Wiese, Immigrant Justice Program Director at Asian Law Caucus.

The Habeas Bridge Project, a program of Acacia Center for Justice, connects immigration attorneys with federal habeas experts and volunteer litigators to facilitate legal support for detained immigrants in Southern California. Fill out this form to become a volunteer habeas mentor or volunteer litigator. If you have an immigration habeas case in Southern California and are looking for mentorship or to be partnered with a volunteer litigator, please email Acacia HBP at habeasbridge@acaciajustice.org.

Date of Training: October 29, 2026
