The Center for Human Rights and Constitutional Law (CHRCL) is proud to announce the launch of our Maasai United Advocacy Project, a powerful initiative aimed at defending the land rights of the Maasai people in East Africa. For decades, the Maasai have faced systemic threats of eviction, losing their ancestral lands to government and corporate interests. Now, with your support and the collaboration of lawyers, advocacy groups, and concerned individuals, we can stand with the Maasai in their fight for justice.

Maasai United

The Maasai, a semi-nomadic Indigenous community known for their deep connection to the land, are once again facing the threat of displacement. In recent years, government-backed efforts to evict the Maasai from their homes to make way for private tourism, conservation zones, and commercial enterprises have intensified. These actions are not only illegal under international human rights law, but they also threaten the very survival of a people who have lived in harmony with nature for centuries.

The Urgency of Our Advocacy

At CHRCL, we believe that defending land rights is a cornerstone of defending human rights. Evicting Indigenous communities like the Maasai from their land not only destroys their way of life but also violates their legal rights to the land they have occupied for generations. Our Maasai United Advocacy Project will mobilize resources to ensure the Maasai can remain on their land, safeguard their cultural heritage, and secure their future.

Our founder, Peter Schey, has personally met with Maasai leaders both online and in person to hear their stories and assess the situation firsthand. What we have seen and heard makes it clear—action is needed now. In collaboration with the Maasai United organization and the Maasai community, we are committed to protecting their rights and amplifying their voices on the global stage.

How You Can Help

We are calling on lawyers, legal advocacy groups, and human rights defenders to join us in this critical fight. The Maasai United Advocacy Project seeks to build a coalition of legal experts who can provide support in the following areas:

  • Challenging illegal land evictions in court and defending Maasai rights under international human rights laws.

  • Collaborating with global organizations to raise awareness and apply international pressure on governments and corporations threatening Maasai land.

  • Lobbying for policy changes to prevent future evictions and ensure that the Maasai can live freely on their land.

The legal fight is just one aspect of the challenge. Maasai families are being forcibly removed from their homes, their livestock confiscated, and their livelihoods destroyed. By volunteering your expertise, you can help ensure that justice is served and the Maasai’s cultural legacy endures.

How CHRCL is Taking Action

We are meeting with Maasai leaders regularly to better understand their needs and provide direct support where possible. In partnership with Maasai United, we are creating a platform for the Maasai people to tell their story and gain the international visibility they deserve. Our efforts include:

  • Monitoring ongoing eviction attempts and gathering evidence of human rights violations.

  • Engaging with international bodies such as the United Nations to file reports and complaints on behalf of the Maasai.

  • Collaborating with advocacy groups to organize campaigns, petitions, and social media efforts to halt the evictions.

Peter Schey’s recent visit to Maasai territories was eye-opening, revealing the scale of the challenges and underscoring the resilience of the Maasai people. These efforts are laying the foundation for a broader campaign to secure land justice for the Maasai and prevent further displacement.
